OCs establish regular menstrual cycles and decrease menstrual blood flow as well as the prevalence and severity of dysmenorrhea.13-16 In a recent randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 201 women ages 15 to 50 with anovulatory uterine bleeding, more than ACOG notes that a low-dose OC formulation is appropriate to control anovulatory bleeding in women 40 years of age or older. OCs have gained support because they provide effective medical therapy while substantially reducing the need for surgical intervention. Control of vasomotor symptoms: Approximately 85% of perimenopausal women experience symptoms of vasomotor instability, including hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disturbances.12, 19 OCs have been shown to improve these symptoms. A three-year prospective cohort study of 100 symptomatic, menstruating perimenopausal women treated with a triphasic OC containing levonorgestrel and 100 age-matched controls found that20: x Vasomotor symptoms were completely relieved in 90% of the OC users after two months. x All OC users obtained relief after three months. x Of the untreated women, 60% reported no improvement in their symptoms. Results of a randomized controlled trial of 132 women with perimenopausal symptoms 74 of whom experienced at least one hot flash daily ; support these findings but are limited by sample size. Women who took a low-dose monophasic OC 20 g mg norethindrone acetate ; had fewer, less severe hot flashes than did placebo users during the six-month treatment period.21 However, these differences did not reach statistical significance. Funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Group of Great Britain, the team, along with colleagues from Guy's Hospital, tried implanting C2 cells into grafts of fresh or freeze-killed leg muscle tissue already removed from the same recipient animal autografts ; . At periods up to 76 days after implantation, the grafts were removed and examined for the presence of C2 cells62. They found that when implanted into regenerating muscle of nude mice, C2 cells grew and fused with the host muscle cells to form mosaic fibres; however, when they were implanted into non-regenerating "inert" parts of the body, they simply produced muscle fibres of C2 origin alone. The C2 cells implanted along with freezekilled muscle cells eventually became cancerous, and the researchers speculated that those implanted along with live muscle might also become cancerous if left long enough62, for example, medications.
